After being let go by Manchester United, Erik ten Hag already has a major new coaching opportunity lined up. According to reports, he’s eager to reassemble some of the players he previously brought to United, including Lisandro Martinez, who has agreed to join him.
Manchester United officially announced Ten Hag’s departure after over two years in charge, a decision that followed a tough season with multiple setbacks. The final trigger was United’s fourth league loss of the season to West Ham, which marked the end of Ten Hag’s tenure.
*The Daily Mail* reports that Ten Hag will head to his property in Austria, where he plans to reflect on his journey with United. During his 850-day stint, he managed 128 games, securing 44 wins, 27 losses, and 14 draws. He also brought home the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup the previous season. Yet, Ten Hag reportedly sensed his time might be limited; he confided to friends after the FA Cup final that he expected his exit.
Over the summer, INEOS and the United board reportedly considered alternatives, including England’s head coach and Thomas Tuchel, but opted to stick with Ten Hag for the start of the 2024/25 season. However, United’s poor start this season—three wins in nine league games—convinced Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the board that a change was needed.
Despite the dismissal, Ten Hag is said to be in good spirits, with a contract entitling him to a £17.5 million payout. Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim is currently seen as the lead candidate to take over at United, with former player Ruud van Nistelrooy expected to step in as interim manager until a permanent successor is appointed.
