Aaron Ramsdale Could Be on the Move to Newcastle, Reports Indicate
Arsenal’s goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is reportedly on the verge of a summer transfer to Newcastle United. Following the arrival of David Raya on loan from Brentford, which includes a £27 million option to buy, Ramsdale was relegated to second choice at Arsenal.
Although Ramsdale signed a new contract with Arsenal last summer, his limited playing time has altered his future prospects. His father previously mentioned that Ramsdale was unhappy since Raya’s arrival, making a transfer seem likely.
On The Highbury Squad, Sky Sports reporter James Green shared insights into Ramsdale’s situation and the potential deal with Newcastle. Green said, “From what I’ve been told, Aaron Ramsdale has agreed to join Newcastle this summer. This information comes from a reliable source connected to his agent, and it appears the deal is set.”
Green added, “This news might not shock many Arsenal fans. Ramsdale is too talented to remain a backup, and his departure seemed inevitable. There have been talks about possible replacements for Raya, including Brighton’s Jason Steele, who would be a solid number two.”
Earlier reports from football.london indicated Ramsdale had declined an offer from a lower-tier Premier League club. At 26, Ramsdale aims to progress in his career, and Newcastle, potentially participating in the Europa League or Europa Conference League next season, would be a step up.
A move to Newcastle would also boost his chances with the England national team. Gareth Southgate has hinted Ramsdale needs regular playing time to secure his spot in the squad for the European Championships, though he has remained in the squad as Raya’s backup.
At Newcastle, Ramsdale would compete with fellow England international Nick Pope. Despite Pope having two years left on his contract, his recurring injury issues might be a factor in Newcastle’s pursuit of Ramsdale.
While the player seems keen on the move, there is no official agreement between the clubs yet. Arsenal, who signed Ramsdale for £24 million plus add-ons in 2022, will be hoping to make a profit on any sale.
