BOMBSHELL: Manchester City’s Secret Squad Overhaul Revealed!
Manchester City has had a relatively quiet summer, but the club’s Premier League squad will still have a fresh look for the 2024/25 season.
Julian Alvarez and Sergio Gomez have both departed, bringing in over £70 million for City before any additional clauses. New signing Savinho, initially expected to be loaned out, will instead join the first-team squad.
Regarding the official 25-man Premier League squad, the exits of Gomez and Alvarez are just part of the changes. Of the 25 possible spots, up to 17 can be filled by ‘non-homegrown’ players—those who did not train in England or come through an English academy. Players born on or after January 1, 2003, are considered under-21s and can be left off the main list.
James McAtee, now 21 and homegrown, must be included on the main squad list. Pep Guardiola has confirmed his inclusion, although McAtee acknowledges he won’t get as much game time as he did during his loan spell at Sheffield United last season.
Oscar Bobb remains eligible as an under-21 player for another season, while Rico Lewis and Nico O’Reilly have two and three more years, respectively. Maximo Perrone also qualifies as an under-21 player, narrowly making the cut by just six days, unless he is loaned out.
With the current setup, City can name a 19-man squad, including 14 non-homegrown players, leaving room for additional signings if Guardiola decides to explore the transfer market further.
There are still three players who could be added to the list. Kalvin Phillips and Joao Cancelo might be sold or loaned out, but no transfers are imminent. If they stay, Phillips would help with the homegrown quota. Additionally, Josh Wilson-Esbrand, who played three of four games during the preseason tour, could be included in the main squad if he remains at City.
