Barcelona Eye Joao Cancelo as Man City Set to Slash Asking Price to Under €20m
Barcelona is set to benefit as Manchester City prepares to accept offers below €20m for Joao Cancelo this summer. The Spanish giants are eager to secure a permanent deal for the full-back.
Cancelo, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona, made enough of an impact to warrant interest for the 2024/25 season. During his stint, he played in 42 matches, scoring four goals and providing five assists, although Barcelona finished the season without any trophies.
Financial constraints have been a significant hurdle for Barcelona in the current transfer window. While they are scouting for the best free-agent deals, acquiring Cancelo would require Manchester City’s cooperation on the transfer fee.
According to Sport, Manchester City is willing to reduce Cancelo’s transfer fee to under €20m, making the deal more feasible for Barcelona. However, it remains uncertain if Barcelona can afford even this reduced fee.
The urgency for Manchester City to sell Cancelo stems from a desire to reduce their wage bill and generate funds for new signings at the Etihad Stadium. Despite once being one of the top full-backs under Pep Guardiola, a falling out led to Cancelo’s absence from the team, with loans to Barcelona last season and Bayern Munich the season before.
Cancelo is expected to depart Manchester City before the new season, but his contributions, particularly in the 2021/22 campaign as an inverted full-back, should not be overlooked.
