Arsenal is on the brink of completing their second summer transfer with Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori likely to join the team. Calafiori’s impressive performances at Euro 2024 have made him a valuable target for Arsenal.
Following the signing of David Raya from Brentford, Calafiori is expected to be the next addition, although negotiations are still in progress. Reports from Corriere dello Sport via Football Italia suggest that Arsenal has not yet agreed to Bologna’s €50 million price tag for the defender, but discussions are ongoing and a resolution is anticipated.
If the deal is finalized, Calafiori will sign a five-year contract with Arsenal, earning about €4 million per year. This signing would be a significant boost for Arsenal, providing a high-caliber centre-back to pair with William Saliba. Calafiori, known for his defensive prowess and ability to distribute from the back, is seen as a perfect fit for Mikel Arteta’s system.
Giovanni Sartori, Bologna’s transfer chief, has indicated that Calafiori is more likely to move to the Premier League than join Juventus, despite his initial preference for the latter. Sartori mentioned that Bologna is open to substantial offers and willing to sell to a suitable club.
Although initially linked with Liverpool, Arsenal now seems to be leading the race for Calafiori. Once Arsenal meets Bologna’s asking price, the transfer is expected to proceed swiftly, strengthening Arsenal’s defense and reflecting the influence of players like Jorginho in the squad.
Arsenal aims to build a team capable of contending for the Premier League title. Acquiring Calafiori, one of the world’s top young defenders, would significantly reinforce their defensive lineup and boost their title ambitions.
In addition to Calafiori, Arsenal is also interested in signing Nico Williams for the wide player position. Mikel Arteta favors Williams, and the club is in competition with Chelsea and Liverpool for the winger. However, Williams reportedly prefers a move to Barcelona and wants his future settled by early August.
Despite his preference for Barcelona, Williams is currently disregarding interest from other clubs. Arsenal needs to stay alert and ready to act if Barcelona hesitates. Williams’ £47 million release clause is seen as affordable, and Arsenal’s ability to offer Champions League football could give them an advantage over Chelsea.
Having a Spanish-speaking manager who is keen on the winger could also give Arsenal an edge over Liverpool if Barcelona pulls back. Additionally, since Arsenal does not urgently need a winger, they can remain opportunistic, ready to move if the opportunity with Williams arises.
