Andrey Santos Reveals Preferred Role as Chelsea Plans for His Future

Chelsea appears to be preparing for Andrey Santos to play a significant role under new head coach Enzo Maresca next season.

The Brazilian midfielder joined Chelsea in January 2023 but has yet to make his first-team debut. Since signing, he has spent time on loan at Vasco da Gama and Nottingham Forest before moving to Strasbourg in February 2024.

Last summer, the 20-year-old extended his stay with the French club—part of the BlueCo ownership group, which also owns Chelsea—until the end of the current season. Santos has delivered an impressive campaign for Strasbourg, registering eight goals and two assists in 20 matches across all competitions.

Santos previously discussed his ideal position in July last year, offering insight into where he sees himself fitting into Maresca’s tactical plans. Having been part of Chelsea’s pre-season tour that summer, he expressed confidence in playing as a defensive midfielder.

Speaking to Premier League Brazil, he explained: “Maresca uses a 3-2-5 formation, if I’m not mistaken, with the full-back positioned inside. I played in a similar setup under coach Paulo Victor (Gomes) with Brazil’s U-15 and U-17 teams.

“As a defensive midfielder, you take control of the game from the front. I feel comfortable and well-adapted to playing as the first defensive midfielder alongside the full-back. I really enjoy dictating the tempo of the match.”
