Manchester United is now in a position to finalize the acquisition of PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte, thanks to PSG’s recent signing of Joao Neves from Benfica.

The 19-year-old Portuguese international Neves had been a target for Manchester United, with Liverpool and other major European clubs also expressing interest in the defensive midfielder. Ultimately, Neves chose PSG, and on Monday afternoon, he was officially presented at Parc Des Princes after signing a five-year contract with Luis Enrique’s team.

PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi expressed his pleasure, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Joao Neves to the Paris Saint-Germain family. Joao is one of the most gifted players in Portugal and on the international stage.”

Last month, Erik ten Hag commented, “We are continually looking to strengthen every position. We have already signed two players, but at a club like Manchester United, we always seek opportunities to improve. We have until August 30 to make further moves.”

However, United must first allow one midfielder, such as Scott McTominay, who is attracting interest from other clubs, to leave before finalizing a move for Ugarte. Ugarte joined PSG from Sporting CP last summer for approximately £51 million. In June, L’Equipe reported that United’s initial bid for the 23-year-old was rejected as it did not meet PSG’s valuation.

With Neves now part of PSG’s squad, the club might be more open to letting Ugarte go. Ugarte started 25 of PSG’s 34 Ligue 1 matches last season. Manchester United kicks off the new Premier League season against Fulham at Old Trafford on August 16.
