BREAKING: Manchester United’s Next Big Thing Signs New Deal!

Manchester United has announced that promising young winger Sam Mather has secured a new long-term contract with the club.

Mather, who is 19, had a contract set to expire in June 2025, meaning he was entering the final year of his current deal. However, the club has now extended his stay, ensuring his commitment beyond the upcoming summer.

This summer, Mather was included in the first-team’s pre-season tour in the United States, marking his first such experience. Additionally, he spent the latter half of the 2023/24 season on a flexi-loan at Rochdale, a system Manchester United introduced last year. This arrangement allows young players to gain senior-level experience while still being involved with the club’s day-to-day activities at Carrington. During his time with Rochdale, who finished mid-table in the National League, Mather made 10 appearances and scored twice.

Before his loan to Rochdale, Mather had already been increasingly involved in first-team training sessions, and his new contract reflects the progress he’s made in United’s academy.

Mather was also a key player in the 2021/22 FA Youth Cup-winning team, where he started in every match, scoring three goals and providing two assists during the campaign. From that successful group, players like Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo have become regulars in the first team, while Dan Gore and Charlie McNeill have made their senior debuts.

Mather faced a setback shortly after the Youth Cup victory when he was sidelined by a long-term injury. However, he made a full recovery last season, impressing in academy matches. He caught attention with a standout performance in January, scoring all four goals in the U21s’ 4-2 victory over Norwich at Old Trafford, and ended the season with seven goals in 10 academy appearances.
