Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount have rejoined full team training earlier this week, and both players are in contention for Saturday’s clash against Crystal Palace.
United have certainly felt the absence of Hojlund in the early season, and Mount played a crucial role in the team’s adjusted pressing system, making their return a major boost.
Hojlund, who sustained a hamstring injury during pre-season, has yet to feature in a match. His return promises a unique dynamic to United’s offense, as his pace and ability to stretch defenses offer something that Joshua Zirkzee doesn’t. However, United may opt for a cautious approach with Hojlund, especially given his muscle injury.
If cleared, he could start at Selhurst Park, though there’s a chance he may be on the bench instead. Fans are eagerly anticipating a potential front three of Hojlund, Marcus Rashford on the left, and either Amad Diallo or Alejandro Garnacho on the right.
On Tuesday night, United’s attack looked sharp against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup, despite their opponent being from the third division. United’s clinical finishing gave Ten Hag plenty to ponder ahead of the weekend.
While Rashford played centrally against Barnsley, he is more effective on the left, meaning Amad and Garnacho are likely competing for the right-wing spot. Some fans suggest Rashford could stay as a striker against Palace to accommodate both wingers, but Hojlund’s availability complicates that scenario.
Regardless of Ten Hag’s final choice, United’s strongest attacking options should be available, leaving little room for excuses if they underperform.
United will also look to avenge their 4-0 loss to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in May, a humiliating defeat that intensified criticism of Ten Hag. This weekend offers a chance to set things right.
Aside from Luke Shaw, who remains sidelined, United’s squad is nearing full strength. Shaw has not played since February but was part of England’s Euro 2024 squad before injuring his calf during pre-season. His return, however, appears imminent.
With back-to-back wins over Southampton and Barnsley, United need to maintain momentum. Tougher challenges lie ahead, but with the squad nearly at full capacity, Ten Hag is in a better position than last season.
After losing to Liverpool before the international break, some are questioning whether Ten Hag’s position is secure. United face Crystal Palace, Tottenham, and Aston Villa in the coming weeks, and failure to get results may reignite that debate—especially now that key players are back.
United are poised to field their strongest XI, and with that comes no room for excuses.
