Gareth Southgate Gives Brutally Honest Reason Why He’s Left Marcus Rashford Out of England’s Euro 2024 Squad: “Performance Consistency and Tactical Adaptability Were Key Factors”
Gareth Southgate has made a bold decision by excluding Marcus Rashford from England’s Euro 2024 squad. This move has raised eyebrows, especially given Rashford’s consistent presence in previous England squads. Southgate clarified his choice, citing Rashford’s less-than-impressive performance in the recently concluded season for Manchester United, where he managed to score only seven goals in the Premier League.
During a press conference where Southgate unveiled a provisional 33-man squad, he fielded questions about Rashford’s absence. Southgate’s response was straightforward: “I believe other players in Rashford’s position have had superior seasons.”
Rashford, who had been a fixture in England’s squads for major tournaments like the European Championships in 2016 and 2021, as well as the World Cups in 2018 and 2022, boasts 17 goals in 60 international appearances. However, his recent club form didn’t meet Southgate’s standards for selection.
In place of Rashford, Southgate opted for attackers such as Ivan Toney, Eberechi Eze, and Anthony Gordon. The squad also saw some notable exclusions like Chelsea’s Ben Chillwell, Raheem Sterling, and Reece James, along with Nick Pope from Newcastle, Eric James from Bayern Munich, and Jordan Henderson from Ajax.
Explaining Henderson’s absence, Southgate pointed to an injury setback during the previous camp that sidelined him for five weeks, preventing him from reaching the required fitness levels.
Southgate’s squad announcements did include surprises, with Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton earning unexpected call-ups. Additionally, Manchester United’s 19-year-old talent Kobbie Mainoo also secured a place in the squad, indicating Southgate’s inclination towards blending experienced players with promising youngsters.
