Hojlund Solution Emerges for Ten Hag as Man United’s Familiar Issue Resurfaces
Erik ten Hag encountered difficulties throughout the season in maximizing Rasmus Hojlund’s potential, despite the striker netting 16 goals in his debut year at Old Trafford.
Manchester United might glean some insights from Denmark’s approach at the European Championships on how to better support Rasmus Hojlund in the upcoming season.
The 21-year-old Hojlund had an individually successful debut at United, scoring 16 goals. However, he experienced periods where his runs behind defenses went unnoticed by teammates. The £72 million acquisition found half of his goals during a prolific spell from Boxing Day to mid-February. Outside this hot streak, particularly in the Premier League, Hojlund often found himself without adequate service from his teammates.
Similarly, for Denmark, Hojlund has faced a feast-or-famine situation in front of goal. After netting five goals in his first two starts, he hasn’t scored since October, leading up to the Euros.
“He is dangerous in the box, he hurts the defense, and it’s clear that opponents keep an extra eye on him—they know what he can do,” Christiansen noted. He also highlighted that Hojlund’s presence “might give more freedom” to strike partner Jonas Wind and Denmark’s number ten Christian Eriksen, emphasizing: “Hojlund needs to be serviced.”
“That’s why I want us to play with wing-backs who just go down the flanks and deliver balls into the box for him. With Hojlund and (Jonas) Wind in there, you can cause problems for the defense.”
Christiansen continued: “(Hojlund) gives me goosebumps. It’s such a remarkable story with him. To join such a big club and already make a name for himself, despite the challenges he’s faced, is impressive for such a young player. It’s awesome.”
