Lionel Messi has achieved a historic feat in Major League Soccer (MLS) by scoring a goal for Inter Miami.
Lionel Messi Sets MLS Record with Goal for Inter Miami
Lionel Messi has added another accolade to his illustrious career, making Major League Soccer history during Inter Miami’s draw with St Louis City SC on Saturday night.
The 36-year-old forward joined Inter Miami following his triumph at the 2022 World Cup with Argentina in Qatar.
After leaving Paris Saint-Germain, where contractual issues prevented his stay, Messi signed with the MLS team on a free transfer.
Though Inter Miami missed the playoffs in Messi’s debut season in the United States, they are now leading the Eastern Conference, thanks in part to strong additions during the transfer window. Messi’s former Barcelona teammates, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, have all joined him at Chase Stadium.
During Saturday’s thrilling 3-3 draw with St Louis, Messi, Suarez, and Alba all found the back of the net, though the team couldn’t clinch a victory.
Despite the tie, Messi made MLS history by becoming the fastest player to record 25 goal involvements in a season. Over 12 games, Messi has scored 12 goals and provided 14 assists, surpassing the previous record held by Carlos Vela, who achieved the same milestone in 16 games.
The game against St Louis was Messi’s last in pink before he joins the Argentinian national team for the Copa America. Argentina, the defending champions from their 2021 victory, will kick off the tournament against Canada on June 21 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Atlanta.
