United Salvage a Point at Anfield
A thrilling encounter at Anfield on Sunday ended in a 2-2 draw as Liverpool and a revitalized Manchester United shared the spoils.
With the two iconic clubs entering the match in contrasting form, many expected Liverpool to dominate. However, United delivered a vastly improved performance compared to their recent showing against Newcastle, holding their own during an intense first half.
United silenced the home crowd early and quickly settled into the game. While Liverpool created a few chances, with Cody Gakpo coming closest in the first half-hour, United consistently threatened down Liverpool’s right flank. Diogo Dalot and Rasmus Højlund breached the Reds’ defense twice, but Amad Diallo failed to connect with Dalot’s precise cross, and Højlund was thwarted by Alisson in a one-on-one.
The first half ended goalless, but the visitors carried their momentum into the second period and struck first. Lisandro Martínez scored with a superb finish, capitalizing on a clever reverse pass from Bruno Fernandes. However, United’s lead was short-lived as Gakpo equalized with a stunning finish, leaving Matthijs de Ligt in his wake.
Liverpool then took the lead after a VAR review awarded a penalty for De Ligt’s handball on an Alexis Mac Allister header. Mohamed Salah made no mistake from the spot, converting with ease.
Despite falling behind, United showed resilience and fought back to level the score. Amad Diallo, who has shone under manager Rúben Amorim, found space again on Liverpool’s right and calmly slotted home the equalizer.
The game reached a frenetic climax, with both sides having chances to snatch victory. Harry Maguire missed a golden opportunity with the match’s final kick. Ultimately, Liverpool missed the chance to capitalize on Arsenal’s draw at Brighton, settling for just a single point.
