” ‘That’s not how we work’ – Gareth Southgate explains his position and tactical plan for Man City star Phil Foden in the upcoming international matches”
Southgate Explains Strategy for Foden’s Role at Euro 2024
Phil Foden from Manchester City has been showcasing his exceptional skills this season, grabbing the Premier League Player of the Season award for his stellar performances.
Gareth Southgate isn’t guaranteeing that Phil Foden will occupy the number ten spot for England this summer. However, he isn’t worried about where the talented Manchester City player will be positioned.
Foden wrapped up a remarkable season with a fantastic brace on the final matchday, leading City to the Premier League title. He had already been recognized as the Player of the Season in the league, and also bagged the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award. While his standout displays have often come from the number ten role, he has spent most of the season playing on the flanks, occasionally moving inside as a secondary number ten.
As Foden consistently impresses, he’s becoming a strong contender to start for England in the upcoming European Championship. Southgate has refrained from deploying him centrally until he plays there regularly for City, but even then, it’s not a guarantee for the number ten spot.
Southgate elaborated, “Phil has showcased his versatility by playing on the right, left, or in the middle. What matters most for Phil is not where he starts but where he ends up.”
“When he begins on the left with City, he might stay wide or drift inside. Similarly, Jude [Bellingham] has experience as a ten but sometimes takes up defensive duties on the left wing for Real Madrid.”
“We don’t confine our players to the touchline; that’s not our style. There’s a degree of freedom. Phil’s brilliance is evident, and naturally, we want him in central areas. It’s about figuring out the best approach to make that happen.”
Foden is among the four City players included in England’s provisional squad, alongside Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Jack Grealish. Additionally, former academy graduates James Trafford and Cole Palmer have earned spots, while Rico Lewis and Kalvin Phillips will not feature in the summer tournament.
