Willian Reflects on Regretting Arsenal Move: “I Wanted to Leave After Three Months”
Willian, now 36 and playing for Olympiacos in Greece, has revealed that his move from Chelsea to Arsenal in 2020 was one he quickly came to regret. The Brazilian winger signed a three-year contract with the Gunners after his deal at Stamford Bridge expired but soon found himself discontented.
Willian made the switch to Arsenal in August 2020, seeking a fresh start at a new club. In his debut season, he managed 25 Premier League appearances, contributing one goal and five assists. However, his time on the pitch averaged under an hour per game. Despite his contributions, Arsenal struggled, finishing eighth in the league, while his former club Chelsea claimed fourth place and secured the Champions League title under Thomas Tuchel.
By the end of the season, Willian and Arsenal mutually agreed to terminate his contract, just a year after he had signed the lucrative deal. Speaking with Rio Ferdinand on his YouTube channel, Willian opened up about his discontent during his brief stint at the Emirates Stadium.
“I wasn’t happy at Arsenal, and that’s why I didn’t perform,” he admitted. “I don’t want to go into the details, but from the beginning, I was motivated. A new club, new teammates, and a new project – I was excited. But after three months, I told my agent, ‘Please, I want to leave.'”
Willian refrained from criticizing Arsenal, acknowledging its rich history and stature as a major club, but he conceded that the move simply didn’t work out for him. “It was the toughest time of my career,” he said. “I gave up a lot of money, but for me, happiness and passion for football are more important. Waking up each day excited to train is crucial, and I wasn’t feeling that.”
The Brazilian ultimately prioritized his well-being over financial gain. “I told myself and my family, ‘I can’t stay here. I’m not happy. Staying just for money would be unfair.’ That’s why I chose to leave.”
In a separate interview last year with *Sky Sports*, as reported by *Metro*, Willian further expressed regret over leaving Chelsea, a decision that has stung Arsenal supporters. “I wish I’d never left Chelsea,” he admitted. “Looking back at everything, I realize I made a mistake, but that’s life.”
Willian’s reflections highlight the challenges players face when transitioning between clubs, especially when the move doesn’t align with their expectations or happiness.
