Manchester United’s defender Willy Kambwala is on the verge of being transferred to Villarreal for a substantial fee.
The 19-year-old French player was initially hesitant to leave until manager Erik ten Hag informed him that he would be far down the pecking order among centre-backs.
Selling Kambwala will result in a pure profit for United, as he is a homegrown talent. He joined from Sochaux for €4 million at 16 in October 2020, and his contract is set to expire next year.
Upon his return to pre-season training, Kambwala was given an improved squad number, but Villarreal’s attractive offer has persuaded United to proceed with the sale.
While Jonny Evans signed a new one-year contract on Friday, the club plans to sell Victor Lindelof, whose contract also expires next year.
Ten Hag had not planned to use Kambwala until injuries depleted United’s defense last season. He mentioned to a confidant that if someone had told him during pre-season that Kambwala would play under him, he would have called them “crazy.”
Kambwala made his debut in a 2-0 defeat to West Ham in December and started two more games in draws against Liverpool and Bournemouth.
Overall, the centre-back played ten games and received an FA Cup final winner’s medal as he was a late addition to the bench, replacing Casemiro, who had to withdraw.
