Manchester United Poised to Spend £85 Million on Chelsea Target

Erik ten Hag’s team is looking to bolster their defense this summer.

Reports suggest that Manchester United are willing to spend £85 million to acquire Ronald Araujo, who is also on Chelsea’s radar, during the upcoming transfer window.

The Red Devils, who ended this Premier League season in eighth place, have conceded an alarming 86 goals across 51 games. Their defensive frailties have been exacerbated by numerous injuries and underwhelming player performances.

According to MARCA, Manchester United have identified Araujo as a key transfer target. They are set to compete with Chelsea for the right-footed defender ahead of the next season.

With Raphael Varane departing on a free transfer this summer, Manchester United are prepared to offer around £85 million for Araujo. However, the player might turn down a move to Old Trafford due to the club’s failure to secure a UEFA Champions League spot.

Araujo, under contract with Barcelona until June 2026, has won three trophies with the club since his arrival from Uruguayan side Boston River for over £4 million in 2018. The 25-year-old has made 150 appearances for Barcelona, scoring eight goals.

If Araujo opts to join Chelsea over United, he would likely become a key starter, filling the gap left by Thiago Silva’s departure in June and potentially serving as a right-back as well.

Ex-Chelsea Manager Likely to Become Manchester United Boss, Journalist Claims

The Guardian journalist Jamie Jackson reports that Thomas Tuchel is the leading candidate to become the new Manchester United manager.

Jackson noted:

“Tuchel is seen as an accomplished tactician with extensive experience at major clubs. Manchester United believe he has the right temperament to manage seasoned players and are impressed by his CV, which includes winning the 2021 Champions League with Chelsea.”
